Compounded Medication Disclosure

Some medications we prescribe are compounded by licensed pharmacies. Compounded medications are not FDA-approved. The testosterone used in our testosterone replacement therapy is compounded. Compounded medications are prescribed only after laboratory testing, a physical exam and a provider evaluation.

What this means for you

  • A compounded medication is prepared by a licensed pharmacy for an individual patient when a provider decides the patient needs a formulation that is not available as an FDA-approved product.
  • FDA does not review compounded medications for safety, effectiveness or quality before they are marketed, and they are not approved by FDA.
  • Your provider will explain the risks, benefits and alternatives, including FDA-approved options, before prescribing.
  • Prescriptions are issued only after laboratory testing, a physical exam and an evaluation by a licensed provider (by HIPAA-compliant Doxy.me video visit where applicable), and only to patients located in Texas.

Report a problem. If you have a side effect or a problem with a medication, call your provider at (210) 263-9878 and report it to FDA MedWatch at www.fda.gov/medwatch or 1-800-FDA-1088.
